A semi-automatic chemistry analyzer photometer is a laboratory device used to measure the concentration of chemical substances in various types of biological samples, such as blood, urine, or other body fluids. This device combines the principles of photometry (measurement of light intensity) with automatic chemical analysis to provide precise and accurate results.
There are three measurement methods for each type of analyte to be measured:
- Kinetic Method
This method measures the continuous change in absorbance over time as the reaction proceeds. Essentially, the sample and reagent are mixed, and absorbance is measured at fixed time intervals. The change in absorbance per unit time (reaction rate) is calculated. An example is the measurement of ALT and AST.
- Fixed Time Method
This method is based on the difference between two specific time points in the measurement. The difference in absorbance between these two points is used to calculate the result. The sample and reagent are mixed, then absorbance is measured after two predetermined time periods. An example is the measurement of total cholesterol.
- End-Point Method
In this method, after a certain period, the reaction proceeds to completion, so all the substrate (substance being measured) is converted into product, and the absorbance of the reaction solution no longer changes. The sample and reagent are mixed, and then absorbance is measured after the reaction reaches equilibrium or the end point. Examples include the measurement of urea and uric acid.
Advantages of Semi-Automatic Chemistry Analyzers (Photometers):
- Flexibility: Semi-automatic chemistry analyzers are often more flexible, especially in terms of smaller size and weight, and simpler and easier installation.
- Ease of Use: Although not fully automatic, semi-automatic chemistry analyzers are generally easier to operate than fully automatic analyzers. This makes them suitable for laboratories with fewer staff.
- Lower Cost: While offering similar analytical capabilities to fully automatic analyzers, semi-automatic chemistry analyzers are often more affordable in terms of acquisition and maintenance costs. This can be a more cost-effective solution for laboratories with limited budgets.
- Scalability: Some semi-automatic chemistry analyzers can be modularly upgraded to increase analysis capacity as the laboratory grows. This allows laboratories to expand their analytical capabilities over time without needing to replace the entire system.
- Easy Maintenance: Although requiring some human intervention, semi-automatic chemistry analyzers are usually easier to maintain than fully automatic analyzers. Cleaning, calibration, and general maintenance are simpler and quicker.
These advantages make semi-automatic clinical chemistry analyzers or photometers an excellent choice for medium-sized laboratories and hospitals with a smaller patient base.
