Blood chemistry testing is a highly important medical procedure, delving into the complex chemical composition of blood to measure key parameters such as liver function, kidney function, glucose levels, cholesterol, and electrolytes in the blood. With its ability to detect diseases, monitor medical conditions, evaluate organ function, and assess treatment effectiveness, this test serves as a cornerstone in modern healthcare.
Blood chemistry testing is a medical procedure in which a blood sample is tested in a laboratory to measure various chemical parameters in the blood, such as glucose levels, cholesterol, liver enzymes, electrolytes, and so on. This test aids doctors in diagnosing diseases, monitoring medical conditions, evaluating organ function, and planning appropriate treatment for patients.
Some things that can be achieved by conducting blood chemistry testing include:
- Detecting Diseases or Health Disorders: Blood chemistry testing can help detect the presence of diseases or health disorders, including liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, electrolyte disorders, thyroid disorders, and many more.
- Monitoring Medical Conditions: Blood chemistry testing is also used to monitor existing medical conditions.
- Organ Function Evaluation: Blood chemistry testing can provide information about how well the organs in the body are functioning.
- Evaluation of Response to Treatment: For patients undergoing treatment, blood chemistry testing can help evaluate how effective the treatment is.
- General Screening: Blood chemistry testing can also be used as part of a health screening program to assess the risk of disease in individuals who may not have any symptoms that can be routinely done.
In blood chemistry testing, a tool called a chemistry analyzer is typically used:
- Semi-automated chemistry analyzers or spectrophotometers are instruments used to measure the absorption of light by blood samples at various wavelengths, allowing for the measurement of the concentration of certain chemical substances in the sample.
- Fully automated chemistry analyzers are instruments used to analyze blood samples automatically and measure various chemical parameters. These analyzers can work using spectrophotometry methods, ion-selective electrodes, or other technologies depending on the parameter being measured.
Chemistry analyzers can test liver function (ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin); kidney function (creatinine and urea); pancreas (amylase and lipase); heart (troponin and CK-MB), thyroid (TSH and T4); lipids (HDL, LDL, TG), glucose, and electrolytes. These tests will later be considered by doctors to establish a diagnosis in patients, so the selection of precise and efficient equipment is important.
Regarding chemistry analyzer equipment, Isotek has a domestic health device product called FortaceDx k100 Infinity for semi-automated chemistry analyzers and fully automated chemistry analyzers. Both of these devices have different specifications according to the needs of the number of patients and the size of the laboratory.
